ABOUT
MICCS
Multiculturalism and Intersectionality in Complex Cities,
Doshisha University, Kyoto
ESTABLISHMENT
Since the turn of the century, humanity has been crisscrossing the world faster than ever. As boundaries and borders blur, cities and communities are diversifying along with their inhabitants, restructuring the social and economic climate in their wake. The dynamics of these transformations drive innovation and revitalization; however, they also produce challenges such as xenophobia, segregation and gentrification. MICCS has set out to tackle these cross-cutting issues to seek the transformative change necessary for urban justice.
MICCS was established in July 2021 to share knowledge and practices toward conviviality in the cities of the 21st century. We observe how cities and communities are trying to work through the issues from racial/ethnic divides to gentrification, with one such example being the idea of “municipalism” in Europe. “Fearless Cities”, held in Barcelona in 2017, gathered more than 150 representatives from various sites to call for solidarity and hope against the challenges of globalization. MICCS considers these cities as a “laboratory” from which we hope to learn from their unique experiments and new practices, and find new forms of conviviality in the age of super-diversity.
RESEARCH AND ACTIVITIES
MICCS is a research center for analyzing the theories and practices toward “cities without exclusion”. To this aim we carry out the following:
(1) Theoretical research on the social exclusion of migrants, racial/ethnic minorities, and other marginalized groups.
(2) Projects and programs for anti-discrimination and conviviality.
(3) Screenings, forums, art exhibitions, and other events to raise awareness about multiple oppressions and discrimination as well as inclusivity.
