Under a beautiful autumn sky, we held an exhibition and a special event in success – Pak Min-ui and Yun Jeong-suk : Paintings, Poems and Life History of Second-Generation Korean Women in Japan.

We exhibited 19 works in Doshisha University’s Gallery in the first basement of Kambaikan.
Twelve of these works were originals from ‘The Songs for Korean Mothers’, which was serialized in the monthly magazine ‘IO’ from January to December 2020. Five works were newly composed collaborations, and two works were from storybooks: one from ‘Sannen-touge’ (1981) and one from ‘Ao-gaeru’ (1991).

Ms. Pak (1947- ) and Ms. Yun (1946- ) are both second-generation Koreans in Japan. They collaborated to create these works as follows: Ms. Yun composed her poems and Ms. Pak painted works inspired by the poems. As Mr. Itagaki, a moderator of the special event said that these collaborations were created by resonance of Ms. Pak and Ms. Yun and that neither of them was senior or subordinate.

From ‘The Songs for Korean Mothers’, we can experience the four seasons of Korean life in Japan. Ms. Pak and Ms. Yun depict the happy time with their children in ‘The Thing that Makes Mother Happy’ (Number 1. in the series) and ‘Snow’ (Number 2.), the memory of first-generation Koreans in Japan in ‘Present’ (Number 3.) and ‘Great-Grandmothers’ (Number 5.). They depict their family enjoying a grand view of nature in ‘The Night Sea’ (Number 7.), care for the aged in ‘Zinnia’ (Number 8.) and ‘Rocking Chair’ (Number 9.), Korean food culture in ‘The Season of Kimjang’ (Number 11.), their hope for the peace of the Korean peninsula in ‘Cradle Song of Father’ (Number 10.), and finally Korean school life in Japan in ‘Entrance for Korean Primary School’ (Number 4.), ‘Sports Festival in the First Grade of Primary School’ (Number 6.) and ‘Kites, High up in the Sky!’ (Number 12.).

The newly composed works were as follows. Ms. Pak and Ms. Yun depict the identity crisis of Koreans in Japan in ‘You Are Not the Only One’. In ‘Their Easy-Going Song’, Ms. Pak and Ms. Yun celebrate their longstanding friendship. One work that particularly resonated with visitors was ‘My Eyes are Welling Up at the Platform’, which represents emotions that many people understand. Another emotional work is ‘Regret’, which depicts Korean children’s struggle to understand their mothers’ difficulties living in Japan. Those first-generation Koreans in Japan remember their homeland in ‘Wind with a Full Harvest’. This was the first time these seventeen works have been exhibited.

In addition to the above works, we exhibited the original works from the storybooks ‘Sannen-touge’ and ‘Ao-gaeru’. We were therefore able to present the evolution of Ms. Pak’s style over time.

Supplementing the exhibit were some documents, including the storybooks ‘Heranai-inataba’ (1985) and ‘Ringo-no-okurimono’ (1987), coterie magazines ‘Tong-fa’ (1979, 1982 and 1987), the posthumous works of Ko Gap-soon, who was the most important teacher of Ms. Pak and Ms. Yun (1985 and 1992). Through these documents, we presented the two artists’ personal backgrounds to the visitor.

On October 21st, we had a special event. Firstly, I presented the aim of the exhibition, after which, we had a panel discussion with Ms. Pak and Ms. Yun chaired by Ms. Chang, Chief Editor of ‘IO’. They talked about how the series started, their passion for creation, and they shared anecdotes about their parents, their education and food culture, child rearing and care for the aged, and so on.

Beyond the emotions of Korean women, the multicultural audience was filled with happiness, understanding and sympathy; they were nodding and smiling during the conversation. Ms. Pak and Ms. Yun said to the Korean generations to come that their hope is that they don’t feel inferior as a Koreans living in Japan. To Japanese society they asked for respect for Korean rights in Japan and, regardless of one’s descent, they said that we need to talk more with each other.

Due to the prolonged division of the Korean peninsula, Ms. Pak and Ms. Yun haven’t been able to see their family members. But, as second-generation Koreans in Japan, they have satisfied their wishes and they have shared their lives and memories with the first generation in their works. Their hope is to pass on Korean culture to the next generation. Their respect for the previous generation and their affection for the generations to come is human and universal. I hope everyone who encounters their work connects with the warm and strong yet gentle spirit of these women. As a director of this project, I interpret ‘The Songs for Korean Mothers’ as meaning ‘The Message from Second-Generation Korean Women in Japan’. We will continue to follow their works and wait for their new compositions to come.

(Pek Rum)

(The Songs for Korean Mothers)’시리즈.

(The Thing that Makes Mother Happy)’(월간 “이어” 2020년 1월호에 게재, 이하 동일), ‘눈(Snow)’(2월호), 재일코리안 1세와의 추억을 담은 ‘선물(Present)’(3월호), ‘할머니의 어머니(Great-Grandmothers)’(5월호), 가족과 함께 즐겼던 너른 바다를 그려낸 ‘밤바다(The Night Sea)’(7월호), 가족의 요양 보호 경험을 바탕으로 한 ‘백일홍(Zinnia)’(8월호), ‘흔들의자(Rocking Chair)’(9월호), 재일코리안의 식문화가 묘사된 ‘김장의 계절(The Season of Kimjang)’(11월호), 한반도 평화를 바라는 마음을 담아 ‘아버지의 자장가(Cradle Song of Father)’(10월호), 조선학교를 무대로 한 ‘입학식(Entrance for Korean Primary School)’(4월호), ‘운동회(Sports Festival in the First Grade of Primary School)’(6월호), ‘연아 날아라!(Kites, High up in the Sky!)’(12월호).

(You Are Not the Only One)’, 박민의 선생님과 윤정숙 선생님의 우정을 글로 담은 ‘태평한 노래(Their Easy-Going Song)’, 마음 속에서 차오르는 서글픔을 표현한 ‘그런 날(My Eyes are Welling Up at the Platform)’, (Wind with a Full Harvest)’(이 작품들은 모두 이번 전람회에서 최초 공개).
